The programme of Integrated Seed Sector Development (ISSD) in Ethiopia has been in operation since mid-2009. It aims to strengthen the development of a market-orientated and pluralistic seed sector as well as to alleviate major bottlenecks within the system.

The programme consists of different components including Partnership and Innovation, Enabling and Evolving Policies, Local Seed Businesses, Private Seed Producers and Companies and Knowledge Sharing. The different teams work closely with local partners to make quality seed of superior varieties available and affordable to a large number of farmers.

Innovations are tested in selected districts (woredas) before they are scaled-up. By tackling the quality of seed and promoting market orientation, the programme has seen increases in productivity and seed consumption thus contributing to food security and economic development in Ethiopia.
